Prof. Dr. Osman MERT

Osman MERT, born in Mersin, completed his primary and secondary education there. In 1994, he graduated from the Department of Turkish Language and Literature Education at Atatürk University, Kâzım Karabekir Faculty of Education. On December 14, 1994, he started working as a research assistant at the Department of Turkish Language and Literature Education at Atatürk University, Kâzım Karabekir Faculty of Education. He completed his M.A. in 1996 and his Ph.D. in 2002.

The projects Osman Mert took part in are as follows;

  • Past and Present of Turks Living in the Republic of Georgia (Education, Language, Literature, History, Ethnology, and Surveys),
  • The Development of the Concept of Writing in Turkish Culture,
  • Epigraphic and Photogrammetric Researches on Turkic Inscriptions in South Turkistan, Caucasus, and Europe and Runic Inscriptions in Turpan and Neighboring Regions,
  • Development of Turkish World Citizenship Curriculum and Evaluation of Its Effectiveness,
  • Turkish Cultural Artifacts in Erzurum-Nakhchivan Silk Road Route,
  • Adaptation Guide To Educational System Social Life For International Students, 
  • Research of Prospective Teachers’ Use of Local Dialect Features,
  • Turkish World Citizenship from the Perspective of Intercultural Education

In 2007-2008, he was assigned to the Department of Turkology, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Cultures, Mongolian National University. He completed the “Mongolian Preparatory Program of the Mongolian National University, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Cultures” in the same period.

On January 5, 2011, he received the title of associate professor in Turkish language/Köktürkçe; on March 24, 2016, he received the title of professor.

Between 2002-2004, he served as the Deputy Head of the Department of Turkish Education at Kâzım Karabekir Faculty of Education; between 2012-2016, he served as the Director of Atatürk University Turkish Teaching Center (ATATÖMER), Director of the Middle East and Central Asia-Caucasus Research and Application Center, Deputy Director of the Institute of Turkic Studies; between 2020-2023, he served as the Director of Atatürk University Institute of Turkic Studies.

Between 2002-2004, he served as the Deputy Head of the Department of Turkish Education at Kâzım Karabekir Faculty of Education; between 2012-2016, he served as the Director of Atatürk University Turkish Teaching Center (ATATÖMER), Director of the Middle East and Central Asia-Caucasus Research and Application Center, Deputy Director of the Institute of Turkic Studies; between 2020-2023, he served as the Director of Atatürk University Institute of Turkic Studies.

Osman MERT, who became a member of the Scientific Board of the Turkish Language Association in 2019, worked as a member of the Inscription Science Science and Application Branch, Spelling Guide Commission, Historical Dictionary of Turkish Commission and Turkish Language Research Yearbook- Belleten (Academic Journal) Editorial Board at the Turkish Language Association between 2019-2022.

Since 2022, Osman MERT, who has been the President of the Turkish Language Association Inscription Science and Application Branch, has also worked as a member of the Term Branch and the Editorial Board of the Yearbook of Turkish Language Studies- Belleten (Academic Journal).

Osman Mert is a member of the Commission for the Preparation of the Directive on the Establishment of Higher Education Area of the Organization of Turkic States, Union of Turkic Universities. At the same time, he continues his academic studies at Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, Department of Old Turkish Language.
